Laughing Squid has the background on San Francisco’s famed, but now lost, Beatles house mural. I think the most depressing part of that story is the Where Are They Now sentence at the end, which speaks volumes about a lot of things wrong with San Francisco.
Over in Golden Gate Park, people are getting their panties twisted because the boathouse might actually be used for something worthwhile. Here’s what could be:
Swan boats. SWAN BOATS! What the fuck is wrong with people who’d be opposed to a nice indoor seating area where you can look at swan boats off in the distance? It’s San Francisco, so you’d be surprised. Or not. Anyway, SF Citizen shares what it looks like now, and gives you information on how you can share your opinion on the project, which is hopefully not GAH PROGRESS OH MY GOD MAKE IT STOP.
The folks at 7×7 (I don’t know, it’s some magazine for tourists or something) put together this colorful map of San Francisco, such as is all the rage these days:
Tenderblog points out that it seems somewhat whitewashed. Hunter’s Point does look like it’s there only because it was too big for the artist to ignore it. As usual, they pretend that the Tenderloin doesn’t exist at all. Spots Unknown noted that they also left out the Marina, a rather strange thing given the 7×7′s alleged readership. But the worst part of this map is clearly the part where they included NOPA as a legitimate neighborhood name.
The paradox is this: Cultural conservatives revel in condemning the loose moral values and louche lifestyles of “San Francisco liberals.” But if you want to find two-parent families with stable marriages and coddled kids, your best bet is to bypass Sarah Palin country and go to Nancy Pelosi territory: the liberal, bicoastal, predominantly Democratic places that cultural conservatives love to hate.
